Choosing a collet for your TIG torch
A collet is a small part that has a lot of influence on your arc. Here you can read what it does, how to choose the right one and when to replace it.
What does a collet do?
- It clamps the electrode so it does not move.
- It passes the current from the torch to the electrode.
- Together with the collet body or the gas lens, it determines how far the electrode sticks out.
Which thickness do you choose?
The collet must fit the electrode exactly. The common thicknesses are 1.0, 1.6, 2.4 and 3.2 mm. Always choose the same thickness as your electrode. If you use a gas lens, that must have the same thickness too.
Collet, collet body and gas lens
- The collet clamps the electrode.
- The collet body holds the collet and guides the gas.
- A gas lens replaces the collet body and makes the gas flow calmer.
Which one you use depends on your torch type (WP9/20 or WP17/18/26). Read which gas lens fits your torch.
When do you replace a collet?
- The electrode is loose or slips while welding.
- The collet is visibly burnt or deformed.
- The arc is unstable while your electrode and gas are fine. See TIG welding problems and how to fix them.
