TIG torch parts explained
If you want to replace parts or improve your torch, it helps to know what is what. Here you go through the torch from back to front.
The parts
- Back cap: closes the rear and holds the electrode. There are short and long versions. Read choosing short or long.
- Torch body (head): the part where the hose connects and that distributes the current and gas.
- Collet: clamps the electrode and passes on the current. Read how to choose the right collet.
- Collet body or gas lens: holds the collet and guides the gas. A gas lens makes the gas flow calmer.
- Cup (gas nozzle): directs the gas to the weld pool. Read how to choose the size.
- Electrode: the tungsten electrode the arc burns on. Read how to choose the right electrode.
Which torch type do I have?
The type is often printed on the torch head or in the manual. WP9 and WP20 are smaller and medium torches, WP17, WP18 and WP26 are the well-known torches with a larger head. Parts for one type do not always fit the other. With a gas lens adapter 17GL you can use our WP9/20 parts on a WP17, WP18 or WP26. Read which gas lens fits your torch.
What wears first?
- The cup (cracks, dirt) and the collet (loose, burnt) wear out fastest.
- The electrode has to be ground and replaced regularly.
- The back cap and the rubber ring come loose or leak after a while.
